The Location:
Clare Island is located six kilometers off the coast of Co Mayo on the West Coast of Ireland in the raging pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Farm derives its name from the small Island close by that offers minimal shelter from the elements.

The location of this marine site is recognized as one of the most exposed in Western Europe. The principles of organic farming demand that the farming methods employed in so far as possible resemble the natural habitat of the species. The high tidal exchange rates and subsequent tidal swelling which characterizes the area ensure that new water is constantly being flushed through the cages. The high water movements generate strong water currents against which the fish are compelled to swim. Such strong exercise result in fish with a firm flesh and a lower than average fat content.

The feed:
Fishermen based on Clare Island feed the fish daily. They are fed pellets made from Bi-products of Pelagic fish (Herring & Mackerel) caught for human consumption. i.e. a sustainable resource. Ground up Crustasian shells are added to the feed along with Phaffia Yeast which ferments and to give the fish a distinct soft pink color.

Stocking Densities:
The fish are stocked in the cages at 2 fish per cubic meter. About half that of conventional farms.
